Project: Consumers Energy MGP Sault Ste. Marie
Date: April-July 2010, September – November 2011
Scope: Dredge St. Mary’s River, dewatering, water treatment, solidification, transport and disposal of contaminated sediment.
In 2011, K&D completed the final phase of sediment dredging, stabilization and disposal on the Sault Ste. Marie Manufactured Gasification Plant (MGP) site in partnership with Great Lakes Dock & Materials under contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The project was completed using funds from the Great Lakes Legacy Act, with local matching funds provided by Consumers Energy. Other key project partners included the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the city of Sault Ste. Marie, and the Binational Public Advisory Council. The final project phase was managed by CH2M Hill. In total, approximately 30,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment were dredged, stabilized and disposed.

The sediment was contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, better known as PAHs. K&D stabilized, transported and disposed dredged sediment, collected and treated released water, then discharged treated water to the City of Sault Ste. Marie wastewater treatment plant. The 100 GPM treatment system consisted of fractionation tanks, a sand filter, bag filters, an organo-clay canister, tri-carb canister, and two granular activated carbon (GAC) canisters. Approximately one-million total gallons were treated and discharged. This was the last known area of significant contamination on the U.S. side of the St. Marys River Area of Concern (AOC). K&D has completed twenty three (23) MGP remediation projects in Michigan.
